Barcelona hosts one of Europe's most important AI supercomputers - and a tech scene finally catching up.

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS) operates MareNostrum, one of the largest public supercomputers in Europe, and is the Spanish node for the EuroHPC programme. MWC (Mobile World Congress) anchors a telco-and-5G ML community each February. UPC and Pompeu Fabra produce strong graduates, and a younger generation of AI-native startups (Freepik AI, Typeform ML, Glovo logistics) has matured.

Economy: tourism tech, telecom AI, and public compute

Barcelona's AI work concentrates around applied ML for tourism platforms, telecoms (Telefónica), and e-commerce. The BSC hosts Spain's sovereign AI compute (MareNostrum 5) and coordinates model-training programmes for Spanish and Catalan. Salaries are lower than London/Berlin; cost of living has risen sharply but is still favourable.
