Pittsburgh's AI identity is robotics. Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science and Robotics Institute have spun out more production robotics companies per capita than any other US university. "Robotics Row" along the Allegheny runs from Argo AI's former offices through Aurora, Motional, and a dense cluster of startups. Duolingo's HQ is downtown; Google has a growing Pittsburgh presence; and the University of Pittsburgh adds clinical-AI depth.

Economy: from steel to silicon to robots

Pittsburgh's post-industrial repositioning around robotics, AI, and biotech took a hit when Argo AI wound down in 2022, but Aurora's public listing and continued Motional and Stack AV activity have kept the sector alive. CMU's recurring flow of PhDs into local startups is the most reliable talent pipeline outside the coasts.

Civic impact

Civic impact: autonomous vehicle testing, public health

Pennsylvania was one of the earliest US states to permit autonomous-vehicle testing on public roads, and Pittsburgh neighbourhoods have been used as real-world test environments for nearly a decade. UPMC and Pitt are deploying clinical AI; the city is exploring computer vision for infrastructure inspection of bridges.
